NOFX, Bouncing Souls, Cobra Skulls and Old Man Markley 2/03/11

Well I must say living in this small town does have it's benefits. Three different states with awesome venues in a short driving range not to mention our very own Orange Peel in Asheville, NC that are starting to get some of the best acts I care to see. Anyways, with that said I will begin with my review. I do apologize for the amount of time it took me to get this to you all.

So some of you may have read about the show I went to in Raleigh with the Cobra Skulls http://www.cobraskulls.com/. I was very fortunate to have become friends with them at that show. They are such an amazing band and I will be behind them 100% to help them grow. I have stayed in touch with them some what and knew that they where going to be coming around with NOFX. I also write for the web zine www.stillnotdead.com out of Charlotte so as I said earlier at times I do have to make road trips to see most of the shows. I am good friends with a lot of people in Charlotte and had planned to go there for the NOFX show to be able to see everyone. Then unfortunately Fat Mike ended up with a severe case of Laryngitis and was not going to be able to sing and canceled the last few shows including the Charlotte show. Lucky enough I was able to make arrangements to go to the last show of the Tour in Knoxville, TN. Let me just say that this show was definitely one of a kind.

First up to play was the Cobra Skulls. They had been second on the line up but due to Luke coming down with an awful cold they opened the show case and played an acoustic set. Sadly enough because of the changes by the time I made it and got in the doors we were only able to hear the last song. The brighter side of things is that they will be going into the studio to record a new CD and as a heavily touring band, they will most definitely be back around. I can't say this enough but you must, no wait, you have to check them out. Old school punk is on a come back.

Next up was Old Man Markley http://www.oldmanmarkley.com/Home.html. I myself had never heard of them until that night and I have to say it's always great to discover new bands especially when seeing them live. They are an awesome crowd of people. Very talented and with so many people in the band they give you a lot to look at. Everyone really just works well together. There sound is Folk, Bluegrass, Punk. I think if you put them on a line up with Frank Turner and Armchair Martian it would make for an amazing show. Either way this band has talent.

Following was the Bouncing Souls http://www.bouncingsouls.com/. This band has been around forever and they are just as awesome now as they where back in the day. They played a mix of songs from past and present cds, this makes an old fan happy. This was my second time to see them live. The first was at a Warped Tour and amazingly enough they were walking to there vehicle at the time I was leaving warped tour and I was able to meet a few of them. I was able to get my way to the front and on the bar staring up at them and interacting with other fans. That's one thing I love about going to shows, it's making new friends and being surrounded by people who love the things that you do and appreciate it. Only this time I was also able to stand backstage. It's amazing the difference from watching a band from the crowd, too watching from the stage. At the end of the night I was able to meet them again and get them to sign my concert scrapbook. What a bunch of great guys.

Headlining was of course NOFX http://www.nofxofficialwebsite.com/, now this is the part of the show that only happens once in a life time and I was lucky to be there and see it. Like I said before sadly enough Fat Mike was not able to really sing due to laryngitis. So Devon, Mel, Johnny, and Joey from the other bands sang the songs for them. This mad for a extremely entertaining show that you can't repeat. The crowd was going crazy. The place was packed for each band that played. It was a great line up and so much fun. I was lucky to have been able to experience it from the front row to the back stage. What a hell of show, I will NEVER forget.

At the end of the night we helped load up and hit the road to the house. Due to the cancellations of some shows and Luke being sick, The Cobra Skulls crashed at the house for a few days. We had so much fun hanging out and watched movies. What a great group of people, can't wait for the next show and new Album, keep your eye out for them. They are amazing people all around.
